Mulching vs Bagging vs Side Discharge Mowers?

Another important thing to consider is what to do with your lawn clippings.

Side Discharge Mowers

A side discharge ride on means that a majority of the power goes into cutting the lawn. This means that a side discharge rider can mow very quickly in most conditions and just flicks the clippings to the side. But it can be messy if you are cutting near roads or entertainment areas. By adding a catcher or a mulcher, this prevents the mess, but detracts some of the cutting power resulting in a slower cut.

Mulching Mowers

Mulching your lawn basically means, cutting the grass up into very fine cuttings that get distributed across your lawn. The idea being that they break down, and these nutrients are put back into your soil helping you maintain your lush green lawn. It’s also great for the environment as you won’t need to add as much fertiliser. But the downside with mulching is that it works best with ideal conditions. It works best on short lawns and very dry lawns. Not only that, mulching a bad lawn with lots of weeds can result in a worsening lawn through distribution of these seeds.

So many people prefer a mower with a catcher or bag. This might be because they don’t want to see little bits of grass on their lawn. Or maybe there are a lot of leaves and/or weeds throughout the lawn, and this will pick them all up. But this does leave you with another conundrum- what to do with your clippings.
