Face Masks… they come in a range of styles. Some provide more protection than others. Some are disposable and some are reusable.

We deliver face masks Australia wide, so you can rely on us to help you out.
These are the best disposable type of face mask. They block ≥ 94% of non oil-based airborne particulates. They fit snugly to your face, preventing particles from coming in from the sides. These are most often used when cutting, drilling, grinding and removing hazardous material like asbestos.
Similar to the P2 variant, this type of respirator face mask fits snugly to your face and is disposable. The main difference is that the filter material is not as effective. It is definitely still an effective mask, but just not up to the same standard as the P2.
A surgical face mask is for dentists, doctors, nurses and other health professionals. They are also known as a procedure mask, medical mask, or examination mask. Within the range of types of surgical masks, there is a BFE rating. Some are rated higher than others.
Most disposable surgical masks are non-sterile – however for very specific circumstances in the health sector, some come individually packaged and sterile.
These facemasks have a physical barrier to protect the user from hazards, such as splashes of large droplets of blood or body fluids. They are also designed to prevent the wearer from spreading bacteria to other people.
Surgical masks are not respirators as they are not designed to seal tightly against the user’s face. Air can pass through the gaps in the sides.
A daily protective mask looks like a surgical mask but is not approved at the same standard as one required for invasive medical procedures. A daily protective mask is often seen in Asian countries where the wearing of masks during daily activities such as work and shopping is more of a norm.
Face masks for preventing illness
There are three main ways illnesses can spread:
1. surface transmission,
2. water droplets in the air, and
3. aerosol particles.
Surface Transmission
When a person is first infected with a virus, it starts to take hold in their body before they even know. This is why people are often contagious for five days or more before they ever show symptoms.
If someone coughs or sneezes, or touches their nose then the virus can land or be transferred onto a surface.
Sitting on a surface, the virus like Covid-19 can survive for as long as several days. While copper surfaces kill the virus in four hours or less, COVID can survive on plastic for as long as 3-9 days, and on ceramics for 5 days or so.
If someone comes along and touches the contaminated surface, the virus can transfer to their hands. If they later touch their face, then the virus can enter through the eyes, nose, or mouth.
A face mask will not help you if you don’t wash your hands! Any type of mask can act as a reminder not to touch your face. Another important thing to remember is never to put your hand under your mask.
Water Droplets in the Air
When people simply breathe, they exhale tiny water droplets that are too small to see. Studies have confirmed for sure that these tiny water droplets carry the virus and can infect other people if they get into their mouths, noses, or eyes.
When people simply breathe, they exhale tiny water droplets that are too small to see. Studies have confirmed for sure that these tiny water droplets carry the virus and can infect other people if they get into their mouths, noses, or eyes.
Exhaled water droplets are pretty heavy and fall fairly quickly to the ground where they can no longer be inhaled. This is why recent recommendations by the Department of Health recommend keeping 1.5m or more away from people at all times. It gives the water droplets time to rest.
If you are wearing a face mask and are staying 1.5m away, this increases your protection from water droplet transmission.
Aerosol Particles
While Aerosol particles are similar to water droplets they are even smaller! These microscopic particles are created when someone coughs or sneezes. As they are small and light they can float around in the air- which is a huge reason why a face mask is so important.
The World Health Organisation says that aerosol particles have been confirmed to stay in the air for up to 3 hours, with COVID still detectable inside of them.
Why Face Masks Are Good for Stopping the Spread
Most masks, especially homemade or cloth masks, are not very effective for blocking out aerosol particles floating in the air. The small size of aerosols allows them to pass through the holes in your mask that you breathe through.
Face Masks stop you from inhaling particles
The mask that offers the best protection is a Particulate Respirator or what we called a P2, N95 or Kn95 face mask as it filters out ≥ 95 of airborne particles.
While a particulate respirator can not guarantee you won’t get sick, it has a high filtration ability compared to most masks on the market. Depending on where you are in the world, you might know a particulate respirator as a N95 Mask, FFP2 Mask, P2 Mask or KN95 mask.
Face Masks contain your particles inside your mask
You know the saying, eliminate the risk first! Face masks are effective for keeping infected water droplets in. This means that by wearing a face mask you are stopping your particles from blowing around the air hours after you leave the building.
In other words, if someone is infected, it’s essential that they wear a mask to help protect everyone else. Even a homemade mask can help keep the water droplets from their breath from scattering throughout the air.
